Fénis Castle: The History of a Legend
Fénis Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in all of Italy. Towers, crenellated walls, majestic gates—everything you imagine a medieval castle to have, straight out of a Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale, is here. The castle is in excellent condition despite its nearly 700 years of history. Construction is believed to have taken place between 1320 and 1420. Over a century, it was shaped into an extremely elegant residence. It is likely that Fénis Castle was not built as a defensive stronghold. Unlike many perched castles, it sits in the middle of lush meadows without any natural defenses.
Over the years, Fénis Castle underwent various phases of construction and renovation, passing from family to family. The first works began at the behest of Aimone of Challant, who inherited the castle from his grandfather, Ebalo Magno, and continued with other prominent members of the Challant family who adorned it with decorations and frescoes. With the decline of the family in the 1400s, the castle also fell into disrepair until Alfredo d’Andrade acquired and restored it in 1895, eventually donating it to the state.
